Abstraction has always been at the heart of my practice—a long-term passion, aim, and evolving pursuit. My journey began with a deep curiosity for structure and form, explored through complex studies and material experiments. Early works involved hand-cut strips with imposed patterns, later evolving into layered compositions using graphic offcuts. I was initially drawn to the work of Popova and Stepanova, and it was through formal art studies that I discovered the Bauhaus and Walter Gropius. This was a turning point—igniting an enduring obsession with abstraction.
Architectural structures, shadows, and the tension between positive and negative space became recurring themes. I was seeking a visual language that felt immediate, intelligent, and emotionally resonant—refined yet spontaneous. My process balances construction and chance, precision and unpredictability—a dualism that continues to shape the work.
An essential part of my practice is a deep understanding of complex color mixing and the nuanced behaviour of paint itself. Working with oil and other challenging mediums requires an intuitive ability to anticipate how pigments interact—particularly in wet-into-wet techniques. Over time, I’ve developed a unique control over the medium, allowing for subtle transitions, layered depth, and a material presence that is both responsive and deliberate.
In the late 1980's and 1990's l wasn't initially exposed to the broader international art world in the way artists are today. What defined my generation was the need to forge our own paths- there was no easy access to global trends,no culture of imitation.
We had to build strength in our work through persistence, experimentation, and self direction. For me, it was never about following; it was about arriving at smething authentic- work that carried presence, and conviction, while remaining deeply aesthetic but challenging.
Abstraction, for me, is not just a method; it’s a way of seeing—of translating the world into something distilled, constructed, and felt.
